چکیده

Agrichemicals have been extensively used on crop field to control unwanted invasive weed species. The impact of agrichemicals on aquatic vertebrate species has been a matter of increasing concern to researchers and environmentalist. The present study aimed to evaluate the acute effects of sublethal concentrations (10% of the LC50-96h) of an atrazine based herbicide on several immune system parameters of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) fingerlings. After 24 h exposure of fingerlings to atrazine, a significant reduction on coelomic cell phagocytic index, serum bacteria agglutination and bactericidal activity was observed, but after 10 days exposure only serum bactericidal and serum agglutination activity were reduced. In contrast, a higher antibody agglutination titer was observed 21 days after fingerlings inoculation with Aeromonas hydrophila and exposure to atrazine compared to inoculated nonexposed fish. The data presented herein demonstrate that atrazine decreases the natural immune response of silver catfish and could contribute to increase fish susceptibility to opportunistic infections. In addition, atrazine might contribute to nonspecific immune stimulation that could lead to immune deregulation or autoimmune diseases. Key-words: atrazine, silver catfish, immune suppression, phagocytosis.

Increased immunoglobulin production in silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) exposed to agrichemicals

Fish vaccination has been increasingly exploited as a tool to control pathogen infection. The production of immunoglobulin following vaccination might be affected by several factors such as management procedures, water temperature, and the presence of xenobiotics. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the kinetics of immunoglobulin production in silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) inoculate...

Activity patterns of South American silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen).

The South American silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) is a widely distributed species in Central and South America in areas east of the Andes between Venezuela and the northern parts of Argentina. The bottom dwelling species occurs in lakes and reservoirs as well as in rivers. Between June 2000 and December 2001, sixteen silver catfish were tracked during fourteen 24-h cycles in two-hour-intervals...

Temperatures for fertilization and hatching and their influence on determining the sex ratio of the silver catfish Rhamdia quelen

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of water temperature during fertilization and egg incubation in the determination of the sex ratio of fingerlings of silver catfish Rhamdia quelen. Water temperatures of 19, 25 and 30°C were used during the egg fertilizations, and the eggs were then incubated at temperatures of 19, 25 or 30°C for each fertilization temperature condition. An increase in t...

Lippia alba essential oil promotes survival of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) infected with Aeromonas sp.

In vitro and in vivo activity of the Lippia alba essential oil (EO) against Aeromonas sp. was evaluated. In the in vitro assay the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and a minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of EO for Aeromonas cells were determined using the microdilution method. Twenty five strains of Aeromonas sp. isolated from infected fish obtained from local fish farms were used....

Monoterpenoids (thymol, carvacrol and S-(+)-linalool) with anesthetic activity in silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen): evaluation of acetylcholinesterase and GABAergic activity

This study evaluated the anesthetic potential of thymol and carvacrol, and their influence on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in the muscle and brain of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen). The AChE activity of S-(+)-linalool was also evaluated. We subsequently assessed the effects of thymol and S-(+)-linalool on the GABAergic system. Fish were exposed to thymol and carvacrol (25, 50, 75, and ...
